Hypnosis can be defined as a state of mind enhanced, although not exclusively, by mental and physical relaxation, in which our subconscious mind is accessed and utilised for positive change and enhanced well-being.
Clinical hypnotherapy is an incredibly successful way of treating a host of emotional, psychological and habitual problems – without the use of medication or side-effects. The state of hypnosis allows direct access to our unconscious whilst being completely relaxed. In this state, positive and beneficial suggestions can be delivered directly to the unconscious mind which promotes rapid and long lasting change. The aim is therefore to assist clients in finding meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaviour.
This can vary depending on the issue and how well you respond to hypnotherapy. I do my very best to help you to resolve your problem and achieve your aim as quickly as possible, by allowing positive change to take place.
The answer to this would be ‘virtually everyone’, but this depends on a number of factors such as the clients willingness to be hypnotised at the time, and a fear of losing control. Also the clients presenting problem/issue, including the level of trust between client and therapist can be a factor.
No. You are completely in control at all times. You would automatically reject any suggestion that was inconsistent with your personal values and beliefs. Hypnosis is not something I do to you, but something that you and only you can allow to happen. My role is to help and guide you to make that change that you have chosen. You can easily resist any suggestion at any time and you will only respond to those suggestions that you find helpful in achieving the results you desire. Your subconscious will not let you do anything you don’t want to do. Various news stories, stage hypnotists and gossip, has led many people to believe that when you are in hypnosis, you are under someone else’s control. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you are hypnotized, you are just really relaxed and focused – in fact, the most common comment following a session is “Was I hypnotized?”
People often say things like “I could hear every word you were saying”, or “I felt like I could open my eyes if I wanted to”. It is vital to understand that hypnosis is not like being asleep – you can be aware of everything around you, just like when you meditate (in fact the two states are nearly identical). In hypnosis, you simply have a stronger focus internally, plus wonderful deep relaxation.
